Using the leading SHDSL transmission and remote power feeding technologies the ADSL Extender PRO systems are suitable to install 2, 3 or 4 universal subscriber ports (POTS + ADSL/2/2+) with an extended operating distance over 10 km using 1-4 pair of existing copper cables without any further infrastructural investment.

Targeted  applications

ADSL line-reach on rural / low density areas for customers who are out of the reach of existing DSLAM infrastructure (4+ km from the DSLAM).

Business application to dedicated subscribers who are living far from the DSLAM and therefore cannot get the necessary download / upload bandwidth.

Substitution of old multiplexers to provide ADSL Services / Broadband Internet Access for those subscribers who are serviced by old analog multiplexer systems.

Description of the system

As it can be seen on the following ‘graphical plan’ the ADSL Extender PRO system platform consists of a rack-type Exchange Unit card (EU) located at the telephone exchange or at the street cabinet, an outdoor Remote Unit (RU) installed on the line (pole, wall or underground pit installations) and a Network Termination Unit (NTU) which is placed at the subscribers’ premises. The RU is remotely powered from the Central Office on the same copper pair(s) while the NTU is locally powered from the 230 Vac mains.

The ADSL Extender PRO EU connects 1-4 POTS lines from the POTS Exchange and 1-4 ADSL/2/2+ physical lines from the DSLAM. It collects and transmits their traffic over 1-4 SHDLS transmission lines (copper cable) to the 1 or 2 ADSL Extender PRO RU(s). One ADSL Extender PRO RU can connect 1 or 2 ADSL Extender PRO NTU(s) on 1 or 2 SHDSL pairs.

The basic configuration of the system supports 2 subscribers on 1 or 2 pairs. There are alternative configurations where the ADSL Extender PRO RU connects 2 different subscribers over one pair each.

Operating Distance

The system factory default settings are optimized for the 10 km distance between the Exchange and the subscriber. This distance is available on 1 or 2 pairs per subscribers with 1 Mbps SHDSL bandwidth on each pairs.

However, the system is able to work on higher SHDSL bandwidth (up to 5696 Kbps) if the overall distance is shorter.

The above figures apply for 0.4 mm diameter cable and noiseless environment.

In the field the transmission distances can be shorter depending upon various disturbing factors (cable noise, crosstalk, etc.) and remote power feeding.

ADSL Bandwidth Allocation

As the ADSL Extender PRO system is a totally transparent transmission device it follows all settings, protocols and commands of the DSLAM. No further configuration is needed!

The optimum reliable transmission speed of the ADSL Extender PRO system is around 1 Mbps per physical copper pair. This total bandwidth can be delivered to the individual subscribers (overbooking is possible). Some possible configurations:

The ADSL Extender PRO system is fully transparent for the ADSL, the ADSL2 and the ADSL2+ services. The network elements (EU and NTU) are

fully compatible with any kind of DSLAM (IP or ATM based) and any kind of ADSL modem (CPE).

Network Management System (NMS)

The comprehensive Network Management System of the ADSL Extender PRO system offers IP-based, centralized, remote and local management capabilities; a full range of operations for the extended POTS & ADSL network:

• QoS settings on three different levels (VoIP, IPTV) in case of bonding operation
• rate adaptive ADSL and SHDSL bandwidth allocation (‘best effort’)
• remote power feeding and transmission quality indicators
• inventory listing, device status and alarm messages
• various statistics, line testing and event logging
